In most people, vision remains stable until their late 40's when the eye's natural lens begins to gradually enlarge and harden, resulting in the blurring of near vision. Over time, it becomes difficult for the muscle in the eye to automatically focus. This is known as loss of accommodation, or presbyopia. Its earliest symptom is difficulty seeing things close-up (correctable with glasses). Eventually the eye's natural lens becomes cloudy and vision blurs, a condition called cataract (cloudy lens, not correctable with glasses). ![]() Crystalens is the first intraocular lens (IOL) for cataract surgery that also provides accommodation and near vision (the ability to see up close). Other IOL's are relatively fixed within the eye. They are not designed to accommodate or move to allow focusing between near and far objects. The Crystalens is a new technologically advanced lens implant that is designed to mimic the eye's natural ability to focus on distant, middle, and near objects. Used to replace the clouded natural lens during cataract surgery, the Crystalens can restore a full range of functional vision, from distance to reading vision without total dependence on glasses or contact lenses. They flex like your eye's natural lens, allowing you to see better at all distances. Crystalens was modeled after the human eye. Like the natural lens, it uses the eye muscle to flex and accommodate in order to focus on objects in the environment at all distances. Crystalens dynamically adjusts to your visual needs. Crystalens is designed to allow the optic, or the central circular part of the lens that you see through, to move back and forth as you constantly change focus on images around you. Crystalens flexes as you focus your vision. If you're like many Crystalens patients, you'll hardly, if ever, need your glasses or contacts again.
