Intacs Prescription Inserts

Intacs prescription inserts provide clear maintenance-free vision for individuals who are mildly nearsighted or for patients with Keratoconus, where contact lenses and glasses are no longer suitable.

Intacs inserts are clear, thin prescription inserts that gently reshape the curvature of the cornea so that light rays focus properly on the retina. The procedure for Intacs does not permanently cut or remove tissue from the central cornea and is reversible.

Intacs inserts cannot be felt, are no more visible than a contact lens and require no maintenance. With Intacs, many people actually see better than 20/20.

Intacs inserts are FDA approved and are supported by more than ten years of clinical studies. They can be removed or replaced if your vision changes.

To ensure you're a good candidate for Intacs, you'll need a comprehensive eye exam by Denver Intacs specialist Paul Cutarelli, M.D. or a referring doctor who will:

  • Examine your eyes to make sure they're healthy.
  • Measure the curvature of your cornea and your pupils.
  • Map the topography of your eyes.
  • Ask you to sign an informed consent form after a thorough discussion of the risks, benefits, alternative options and possible complications.

During your intacs procedure

Your eyes will be numbed with anesthetic drops. A device will be placed around your eye to keep you from blinking.

First, a very small incision will be made in the surface of the cornea. You may feel pressure when a centering guide is used to make two micro-sized, semicircular tunnels in the peripheral cornea. The Intacs will be placed in these tunnels, then the small opening in the cornea will be closed.

After your intacs procedure

You should rest of the remainder of the day. Healing is relatively fast because the incision is so small; most people return to work the day after their procedure. Most healing takes place within the first week, but your vision may fluctuate very mildly for up to a month. Most patients notice significantly improved vision the first day after surgery.

Risks and possible complications

Insertion of Intacs is a very safe procedure, but as with all surgery, there are some risks. Possible side effects include light sensitivity, decreased clarity in dim light, glare or haloes from lights at night, blurry or double vision and fluctuating distance vision. These side effects generally disappear as the eye heals.
