Intraocular Lens Implants
Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are micro lenses that are placed inside the eye to correct cataracts, nearsightedness, farsightedness or presbyopia. IOLs have been used to reduce or eliminate glasses through cataract surgery and refractive lens surgery for over 20 years.
Prior to your lens implant procedure.
To ensure you're a good candidate for a lens implant procedure, you'll need a comprehensive eye exam by Colorado's Dr. Cutarelli or a referring doctor. Your doctor will measure your eye to determine the proper power of the new lens that will be placed in your eye.
During your lens implant procedure
You may be asked to skip breakfast, depending on the time of your surgery.
Drops will be put into your eye to dilate the pupil. The area around your eye will be washed and cleansed, and a speculum will be placed on your eye to keep you from blinking.
A small incision will be made in your cornea and the Verisyse™ Phakic IOL will be placed in the space between the iris and the cornea. Dr. Cutarelli will center the IOL in front of the pupil and gently attach it to the iris (the colored part of your eye) to hold the lens in place. The small incision will be closed with microscopic stitches that dissolve on their own.
After your lens implant procedure
After surgery is completed, Dr. Cutarelli may place a shield over your eye. After a short stay in the outpatient recovery area, you'll be ready to go home. Itching and mild discomfort are normal for a few days following lens implant procedures. Your eye may be sensitive to light and touch.
Dr. Cutarelli may ask you to use eyedrops to help healing and decrease the risk of infection. You can return quickly to many everyday activities, but your vision may be blurry for a few weeks.
Risks and possible complications
As with any surgery, IOL lens implantation poses risks, such as infection and bleeding. After surgery, you must keep your eye clean, wash your hands before touching your eye, and use the prescribed medications to help minimize the risk of infection. Serious infection can result in loss of vision.
