STAAR Implantable Contact Lens/Visian ICL
The Visian ICL™ is an implantable contact lens that's used to correct moderate to high nearsightedness. The ICL is expected to receive FDA approval in the next couple of months.
The ICL is designed to be permanently placed inside the eye behind the iris (colored part of the eye) and in front of the eye's natural lens. It corrects vision problems much the same way as an external contact lens.
The Visian ICL™ may be an option for some who are not good candidates for LASIK. It may be used as an alternative to LASIK in patients who are very nearsighted or those who don't want to make permanent changes to their eyes. Although it's designed to be permanent, the ICL can easily be removed and replaced.
Some studies have shown that the image quality achieved with the Visian ICL is sharper and clearer than that achieved through LASIK.
The procedure to implant the Visian ICL™ is very similar to cataract surgery, except the patient's natural lens is not removed.
