Conductive Keraoplasty (NearVision CK) is a procedure designed to treat "aging eyes" (presbyopia) without the use of a laser.

CK does not use lasers to correct the shape of the cornea, but instead uses radio frequency (RF) to treat farsightedness (hyperopia). The treatment is applied with a probe about the size of a human hair and results in an increased curvature of the cornea, improving near vision almost instantaneously. The results can be dramatic. Monovison therapy (one eye for distance, one for close up) is an option with CK.

It is the first and only FDA-approved vision technology that improves near vision in the millions of baby boomers with presbyopia, the age-related eye condition that sets in after age 40. NearVision CK has been FDA approved for almost 2 years and is the fastest growing vision correction procedure. Improvements in technique have yielded dramatic results. NearVision CK uses radio waves to reshape the cornea and bring near vision back into focus. Minimally invasive and painless, NearVision CK is performed in less than three minutes in the doctor's office with only eye-drop anesthesia. The procedure is laser-free and extremely safe; there is no cutting and no removal of tissue.

Ck is recommended for persons over 40, but Dr. Cutarelli is the one who can determine if you are a good candidate for this surgery, based on not only your age, but your measure of vision, eye health, and any medical conditions you may have. The best candidates for CK surgery are people over 40, and who have had no drastic vision changes in the past year. People with diabetes, glaucoma, keratoconus, herpes of the eye, pacemakers, heart disease, and people with autoimmune diseases are excluded from CK surgery.

How It Works

NearVision CK applies radio waves in a circular pattern on the outer cornea to shrink small areas of collagen. This shrinking pattern creates a constrictive band (like the tightening of a belt) increasing the overall curvature of the cornea to bring near vision back into focus. When the cornea is compressed, it causes a mechanical stretching effect on the corneal fibers that resists the natural tendency of the tissue being drawn toward the pulse of RF energy. In preliminary findings, this low-compression technique may produce more robust results by minimizing the corneal stretching associated with the standard CK technique.

Proven Results for the Plano Presbyope

NearVision CK is the only FDA-approved treatment for improving near vision in presbyopic patients, and it’s producing some impressive results. Data collected 12 months after NearVision CK was performed demonstrated that 98 percent of patients could read J5 (newspaper-sized print) and 87 percent of patients see 20/20 in the distance and also could read (phonebook-sized print) J3 binocularly. No refractive surgical technique can stop the eye’s natural aging process, but the NearVision CK treatment has been shown to produce stable results for months or years after the treatment.
